Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal dies in Richland CO I-26 wrong-way collision

RICHLAND, SC, (April 19, 2026) – Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal, 31, of Lexington, was killed early Sunday morning in a head-on collision in Richland County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 26 near mile-marker 107.5, close to the Interstate 20 interchange. Hykeem-Jamaal was driving a 2018 Nissan SUV westbound when it was struck head-on by a 2023 Hyundai sedan traveling east in the westbound lanes.

Hykeem-Jamaal died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. The 24-year-old Hyundai driver from Columbia also died at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

WRONG-WAY CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Based on preliminary reports, liability on the part of the Hyundai driver appears clear in this crash, as they were driving the wrong way, which caused the crash that took the life of Hykeem-Jamaal.

According to Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, multiple factors can contribute to a wrong-way crash, including driver error, distracted driving, fatigue, and even roadway design issues.

According to the latest data analysis from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, there were 2,008 deaths from wrong-way driving crashes on divided highways between 2015 and 2018, an average of approximately 500 deaths a year. That is up 34 percent from the 375 deaths annually from 2010 to 2014.

Regardless of the outcome of the official investigation, Bond emphasized the importance of retaining an attorney to conduct an independent review of the crash to secure key evidence and protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Time is critical in cases such as this, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is examined promptly,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“An attorney will assess all contributing factors and has the resources to consult expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and review insurance coverage. These steps are essential in helping families pursue compensation and justice,” added Bond.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending an investigation, the family of Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“We understand what victims endure, and knowing and protecting your rights is crucial. As experienced wrongful death attorneys, we handle the process while keeping families informed and safeguarding their legal interests,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity engages in a negligent or wrongful act that leads to another person’s death,” Formica explained.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a case is worth. An attorney will strongly advocate to ensure fair compensation and respectful treatment,” he added.
