Dy’Jean Roberts Dies After Chain-Reaction Crash in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, (May 31, 2026) — A 26-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning in a head-on crash involving three vehicles in St. Petersburg, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Authorities identified the victim as Dy’Jean Roberts, a passenger in a Nissan sedan involved in the collision.

Investigators said a Mercedes sedan traveling westbound on 18th Avenue South crossed into the eastbound lanes near 29th Street South at approximately 1:15 a.m. and struck the Nissan head-on. Following the initial collision, a westbound Oldsmobile crashed into the front of the Nissan.

Roberts suffered critical injuries and was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital St. Petersburg, where he later died.

Police said the drivers of both the Nissan and the Mercedes were initially taken to Bayfront Hospital before being transferred to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

The St. Petersburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on collisions occur less often than many other types of crashes, but they frequently result in fatalities and life-altering injuries because of the tremendous force generated at impact.

According to data from the Insurance Information Institute, an estimated 3,631 motorists are killed each year in head-on crashes across the United States.

Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted promptly by an experienced lawyer to help preserve evidence.

“An attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, who is Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide families who have lost loved ones during this difficult time, all while protecting their rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Dy’Jean Roberts could pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
