CHP: DUI suspect Douglas Guyton charged in Chula Vista deadly crash

CHULA VISTA, CA, (March 29, 2026) — A San Diego man, Douglas Guyton, has been charged with murder following a deadly crash on a freeway connector in Chula Vista, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Authorities said the incident occurred on the Interstate 5 South and California 54 West connector when Guyton allegedly rear-ended a Jeep with significant force. The impact caused the vehicle to plunge off the overpass and into the Sweetwater River below.

Both occupants of the Jeep, believed to be a couple, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Guyton remained at the scene and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has since been charged with murder and is being held without bail. The investigation is ongoing.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This type of crash was entirely preventable. Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs pose a serious danger to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or kills another person,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She further noted, “In addition to criminal liability, a victim’s family may also pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

According to the National Safety Council, approximately 10 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes involve drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications. These incidents rank as the second-leading cause of traffic-related deaths in the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of a victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members can seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other losses resulting from a tragic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such times, and protecting their rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are fully represented,” Formica added.
