CHULA VISTA, CA, (March 29, 2026) — A San Diego man, Douglas Guyton, has been charged with murder following a deadly crash on a freeway connector in Chula Vista, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Authorities said the incident occurred on the Interstate 5 South and California 54 West connector when Guyton allegedly rear-ended a Jeep with significant force. The impact caused the vehicle to plunge off the overpass and into the Sweetwater River below.
Both occupants of the Jeep, believed to be a couple, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Guyton remained at the scene and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has since been charged with murder and is being held without bail. The investigation is ongoing.
