Dorian Batiste killed in Tangipahoa Amtrak crash on Highway 51

TANGIPAHOA, LA, (March 25, 2026) – A 22-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a train versus vehicle crash in Tangipahoa Parish, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said a pickup truck collided with Amtrak Train 59 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 51 and Ponders Quarters Lane at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Dorian Batiste, a passenger in the truck, was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries.

Officials said the train was traveling from Chicago to New Orleans. One passenger on board received medical attention for a panic attack. The incident remains under investigation.

FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Train accidents such as this can happen for various reasons, including train crew error, track defects, mechanical failure, signal issues, or reckless actions. During the investigation, officials will also assess whether the crossing where the crash occurred was properly secured for vehicle traffic.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB), approximately 1,000 people are killed in train-related accidents each year.

Candice Bond, an experienced train accident attorney, said that in cases like this it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted promptly by an experienced attorney to preserve evidence for a victim’s family.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential in helping clients pursue financial compensation for damages or losses following a collision,” added Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Dorian Batiste may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident is considered a wrongful death when either a person or entity commits a wrongful or negligent act resulting in a person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families must endure, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
