Roodhouse Woman Donna Northcutt Killed at Springfield Intersection

SPRINGFIELD, IL — June 4, 2026 — A Roodhouse woman died Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of S. Seventh Street and E. Laurel Street in Springfield, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Authorities identified the victim as Donna Northcutt, 69, of Roodhouse. Officers reported that Northcutt sustained multiple blunt-force injuries in the crash. She was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m.

No details regarding the cause of the collision, the directions of travel of the vehicles involved, or contributing factors have been made public at this time. The identity and condition of the second driver involved in the crash have not been disclosed by authorities.

The Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office are jointly investigating the fatal crash. The case remains active and ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

A wide range of factors contribute to the ongoing rise in traffic fatalities nationwide, though driver behavior remains central to the problem — encompassing speeding, impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving, most notably from cellphone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that 8,055 lives were lost in motor vehicle collisions during the first quarter of 2025.

As the cause and liability of the crash continue to be examined, Candice Bond, a veteran accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, underscored the importance of retaining an experienced attorney to carry out a thorough independent investigation alongside law enforcement efforts.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this one, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the conclusion of the investigation, the family of the victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The immense weight of grief and emotional pain that follows the sudden loss of a loved one in an accident can be utterly devastating for any family,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the tremendous hardship that families are forced to endure during these profoundly difficult times, and making sure their rights are fully protected is of the utmost importance. A wrongful death lawyer will remain actively engaged with the official investigation and work diligently to protect their legal rights and best interests throughout the entire process.”
