Diane Witt and Stacie Segebart injured in Webster County two-vehicle accident

WEBSTER COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle accident that left one person dead and two others injured on U.S. 20.

Investigators said the accident happened May 22 at approximately 4:03 p.m. Emergency personnel transported three individuals to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities said an 82-year-old man from Des Moines was driving a 2011 Honda Fit northbound on P59 when he failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle entered U.S. 20 and was struck broadside by an eastbound 2023 Lincoln Nautilus.

Officials identified the deceased as the Honda driver. Police said he was transported to UnityPoint Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Lincoln driver, Diane Witt, 78, of Arcadia, sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.
A 51-year-old passenger from Westside, Stacie Segebart, was also injured. Authorities said she was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 40 percent of car collisions take place at road intersections. The cause is usually related to running a stop sign or a stoplight. Some of the reasons drivers blow through stop signs include impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving. Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said such cases warrant an independent probe to protect victim’s rights.
“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.
“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

An injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, pending the results of the investigation.
Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.
“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. That’s where an attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” he added.
