Micromobility crash data continues to raise safety concerns nationwide. NHTSA figures show moped and scooter riders face a fatal injury risk roughly 35 times higher than occupants of passenger vehicles. A multi-year review of 5,660 moped crashes found that more than 90% of drivers involved lacked insurance, while just 17% of riders wore helmets. The same research linked alcohol and drug involvement to a 209% increase in the likelihood of severe injury.

E-scooter injuries have climbed sharply in recent years, with UC San Francisco researchers documenting a jump from 8,566 injuries in 2017 to 56,847 in 2022 — an average annual increase of 45%. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded 169,300 emergency room visits tied to e-scooters between 2017 and 2022, accounting for nearly 47% of all micromobility-related injuries during that period.
