Detrice Wortham Killed in Chicago Red-Light Crash on Stoney Island

CHICAGO, IL, (May 24, 2026) – Authorities have identified 64-year-old Detrice D. Wortham as the victim of a fatal crash early Sunday morning in Chicago involving an alleged red-light violation.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to the 6900 block of South Stoney Island Avenue after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision. Preliminary findings indicate that one vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver allegedly ran a red light and crashed into another automobile.

Emergency crews treated victims at the scene before transporting Wortham, a passenger in one of the vehicles, to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, she later died from those injuries.

Police said the 45-year-old driver accused of causing the collision could face felony charges, including reckless homicide with a motor vehicle and driving on a revoked or suspended license.

The Chicago Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Red-light violations contribute to hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries across the United States every year.

According to safety data from 2018, 846 people lost their lives in crashes connected to red-light running incidents. Many of those victims were pedestrians, bicyclists, or occupants of other vehicles struck by drivers who ignored traffic signals, said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

During that same year, approximately 139,000 people suffered injuries in crashes involving drivers accused of running red lights.

“Investigators and accident reconstruction specialists are often essential in determining exactly how a collision occurred. These efforts can play a critical role in helping victims and their families pursue compensation for losses resulting from a serious crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, surviving family members of the victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families impacted by fatal crashes may seek compensation for damages that include loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other related losses following a tragic accident.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted, “Families coping with the sudden loss of a loved one are often faced with complicated legal procedures intended to safeguard their rights. An experienced attorney can provide important guidance during this difficult period while helping ensure surviving relatives obtain the compensation they deserve.”
