NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A pedestrian who lost his life after being struck on U.S. 52 on June 8 has been identified by authorities.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office said 21-year-old Deshaun Brown, Jr., succumbed to injuries after a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash late Sunday night.
North Charleston police said that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
No charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
This tragic accident underscores the dangers that pedestrians face every day in this country.
The Governors Highway Safety Association reported that pedestrian fatalities in North Carolina surged by almost 30% during the first six months of 2024 when compared to the same timeframe in 2023. This sharp increase stood in stark contrast to the national trend, where pedestrian deaths actually dropped by about 3% over the identical period, placing North Carolina among the states experiencing the most significant numerical growth in pedestrian fatalities.
Since 2010, pedestrian fatalities have risen by 77 percent, which is significantly higher compared to the 22 percent increase in all other traffic fatalities during the same period.
“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
