Dereon Robins dies in Spartanburg CO DUI crash in Asheville Hwy

SPARTANBURG, SC, (April 12, 2026) – A 12-year-old boy was among two children killed Sunday afternoon in a suspected DUI crash in Spartanburg County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at Asheville Highway and Brock Street. A 2016 Honda Accord reportedly ran off the roadway and struck two boys riding bicycles on a sidewalk.

Dereon James Robins, 12, and his 9-year-old companion were both critically injured and transported to a hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Troopers said the driver showed signs of severe intoxication and was unable to stand at the scene. The suspect was later denied bond on charges including felony DUI resulting in death, driving without a license, and an open container violation.

Authorities are also searching for a passenger who fled the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This crash was entirely preventable. Impaired drivers pose a serious danger to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

“Drunken and drug-impaired drivers face criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She further explained, “In addition to criminal proceedings, a victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

According to the National Safety Council, 10 percent of all fatal car accidents involve drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications. These incidents are the second-leading cause of traffic-related deaths in the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Dereon Robins could be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such tragic events.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such difficult times, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the case and help ensure that the family’s best interests are represented,” Formica added.
