MONONA, WI, (March 24, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash in Monona on Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a 25-year-old man and injured several others, according to police.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 12:12 p.m. when a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Broadway struck multiple vehicles stopped at a red light at Monona Drive.

Derek Schwarting, of McFarland, was critically injured and transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

A woman sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Officials believe the pickup driver may have experienced a medical episode prior to the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), 509 people died in traffic crashes in 2024, and approximately 24,500 more were injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says speeding is the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

“Contributing factors to be examined include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“It is important to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and locate witnesses. We help guide families through this process,” added Bond, a national legal analyst with Accident Injury News.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes required to help piece together what occurred. These resources are essential in helping clients pursue financial compensation for damages or losses following a collision,” said Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Derek Schwarting could pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families must endure, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”

“An attorney can protect victims from large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly examining the facts of the accident. A lawyer will strongly advocate for a family who has lost a loved one, ensuring that their legal rights are safeguarded.”
