Demarcus Perkins killed in Stone Co Pump Branch Road train crash

STONE, MS, (March 27, 2026) – A fatal train-versus-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Stone County left five people dead and another seriously injured, authorities said.

According to the Stone County Sheriff’s Department, the collision occurred around 1 p.m. on Pump Branch Road near Highway 49 when a van struck a train.

One of the victims, identified as 23-year-old Demarcus Perkins, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Four other occupants of the van, ages 45, 26, 22, and 20, were also killed.

A sixth individual was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans for treatment. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Train accidents like this can occur for multiple reasons, including operator error, track defects, mechanical failure, signal issues, or reckless actions. During the investigation, officials will also review whether the crossing area was properly maintained and safe for vehicles.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB), approximately 1,000 people are killed each year in train-related accidents.

Candice Bond, an experienced train accident attorney, stated that in situations like this, it is critical to have an independent investigation conducted promptly by an experienced lawyer to preserve key evidence for the victim’s family.

“An accident reconstruction team may be required to determine exactly what happened. These resources are essential in helping families pursue compensation for losses resulting from a collision,” added Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Demarcus Perkins may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A case is considered wrongful death when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful actions result in someone’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face during such times, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
