Demarcus Gibbs fatally hit in Lewisville hit-run crash; suspect held

LEWISVILLE, TX, (March 14, 2026) – A 37-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash early March 14 in Lewisville, according to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Demarcus Gibbs, of Shreveport, Louisiana, was walking along the northbound service road near Interstate 35 and Arthurs Lane at approximately 7 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Gibbs suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Officials later identified the driver as a man from Arkansas, who turned himself in on April 14. He has been charged with collision involving death.

The investigation remains ongoing.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In many hit-and-run cases, at-fault drivers attempt to evade responsibility by fleeing the scene. However, suspects can and often do face charges once identified and apprehended.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offense, and statistics show that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on roadways across the United States.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were 5,924 pedestrian-involved crashes in Texas in 2023, resulting in 808 fatalities. Between 2019 and 2023, pedestrian deaths in the state rose by approximately 22 percent.

“Having the proper resources is critical when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These tools are essential in helping victims or their families recover compensation for damages or losses following a crash,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Demarcus Gibbs may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide families through this difficult time while ensuring their rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that are far below the true value of a claim,” Formica added. “An attorney will strongly advocate for their client to ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation.”
