Debra Ramirez among three killed in Martin County head-on crash

MARTIN, TX, (July 01, 2026) — A head-on collision on Interstate Highway 20 in Martin County claimed the lives of a Stanton woman and two teenage passengers Wednesday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities identified the driver as Debra Ramirez, 42, of Stanton. DPS said Ramirez was traveling westbound and attempting to merge onto the IH-20 on-ramp when a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old man allegedly failed to yield the right of way, resulting in a head-on collision.

Ramirez and one of her passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger was transported to Martin County Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The victims were girls ages 16 and 14, although authorities had not immediately released their identities.

A passenger traveling in the other vehicle sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on accidents are among the deadliest types of traffic collisions and account for approximately 14 percent of all roadway fatalities in the United States each year, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

These crashes are frequently linked to driver-related factors such as distraction, impairment, fatigue, or improper passing. However, excessive speed, hazardous road conditions, and mechanical failures may also contribute to serious collisions.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said that in situations like this, an independent investigation can be essential to preserve critical evidence and protect the interests of a grieving family.

“An attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “As an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a grieving family during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights and best interests, while ensuring that a driver who does not obey traffic laws is held accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Debra Ramirez may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in fatal crashes may be eligible to recover compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death lawyer will stay informed about the official investigation and help safeguard their best interests. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
