DETROIT, MI (June 28, 2026) — Two pedestrians were killed early Sunday morning after they were struck by an alleged intoxicated driver on Detroit’s west side, according to the Detroit Police Department.
Police said 51-year-old Dawad Helton and a 43-year-old Detroit woman were found in the roadway at the intersection of W. McNichols Road and Ardmore Street at approximately 2:16 a.m. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the suspect was also found lying in the roadway following the collision and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Investigators determined that the driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The 29-year-old Detroit man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and two counts of reckless driving causing death.
Police said the suspect refused to submit to a blood alcohol test and was remanded to jail following his arraignment.
The Detroit Police Department continues to investigate the fatal collision.
