DOUGLAS, OR, (April 06, 2026) – An 18-year-old California teen lost his life Monday in a crash involving a stalled tractor-trailer along Interstate 5 near Canyonville, according to the Oregon State Police.
Authorities said Davin Jack Smith was driving a Honda CR-V southbound near milepost 90 when his vehicle collided with the rear of a Freightliner that had stopped in the travel lane due to mechanical issues.
Investigators reported that the truck driver failed to move the disabled vehicle onto the shoulder while climbing a grade. Following the impact, the Honda became lodged beneath the trailer and caught fire.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three passengers were also in the Honda at the time of the crash. Two were airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, while a third sustained minor injuries.
The 61-year-old Freightliner driver was taken into custody and booked into the Douglas County Jail. He faces charges including three counts of second-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants. Bail was set at $500,000.
