David Wong killed in Hilo dirt bike collision with Nissan Versa

HILO, HI, (April 22, 2026) – A 36-year-old man was killed Wednesday night in a collision involving a dirt bike and a passenger vehicle in Hilo, authorities said.

According to the Hawaii Island Police Department, David Wong, of Hilo, was operating a Suzuki dirt bike westbound on West Kawili Street at approximately 10:24 p.m. when an eastbound 2012 Nissan Versa attempted to turn into a parking lot near Kino’ole Street and collided with the motorcycle.

Emergency responders pronounced Wong dead at the scene.

Three occupants of the Nissan, including the driver, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact police at 808-961-2339 or Crime Stoppers at 808-961-8300.

DIRT BIKE CRASH INVESTIGATION

This incident highlights the serious risks faced by motorcyclists and dirt bike riders on public roadways.

More than 6,300 motorcyclists and dirt bike riders were killed on U.S. roads in 2023, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, accounting for 15% of all fatal crashes that year.

“Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and a variety of factors can contribute to deadly crashes,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Blind spots, inexperienced drivers, and distracted driving are common causes of these incidents. In many cases, accident reconstruction specialists and motorcycle experts are needed to help determine exactly what occurred,” Bond added.

“Every case is different and requires a detailed investigation. Acting quickly is critical, and families must ensure evidence is examined promptly. Attorneys have the tools to consult expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and review insurance coverage. These steps are essential in helping families pursue compensation and justice,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of David Wong may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in fatal accidents may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other related losses.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their legal rights are protected is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and help safeguard the family’s best interests.”

“An attorney can also stand up to large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly examining the details of the crash. Legal representation helps ensure families receive fair treatment and justice,” he added.
