Saginaw police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred Sept. 8 on the city’s East Side.
David S. Pietras, 75, of Saginaw, was riding his bicycle east on E. Holland Avenue near S. 15th Street at 8:22 a.m. when a dark-colored, mid-size SUV struck him and fled the scene. Pietras was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Saginaw County Crash Team processed the scene, and investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Based on recent Michigan State Police data, hit and run incidents remain a significant concern across the state. In 2023, Michigan recorded 764 crashes involving drivers fleeing the police, occurring within a total of approximately 71,085 vehicle accidents statewide. This represents a troubling trend, particularly given that 19.6 percent of Michigan drivers were uninsured as of 2022 — the fifth-highest rate in the U.S., according to the Insurance Information Institute. The high rate of uninsured drivers likely contributes to hit-and-run incidents as drivers may flee to avoid financial responsibility for damages or injuries they cause.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, but sadly statistics indicate that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads.
