David Olaeta charged in Monterey County accident that killed 3

MONTEREY, CA, (May 02, 2026) – Three people were killed late Saturday night in a multi-vehicle crash on State Route 1 in Monterey County involving a suspected impaired driver, according to authorities.

The crash occurred north of Springfield Road shortly after 10 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said a GMC pickup traveling southbound crossed into the northbound lane, sideswiping a Ford pickup before continuing into oncoming traffic.

The GMC, driven by 51-year-old David Olaeta, then collided head-on with a Honda sedan. Three occupants in the Honda were transported to a hospital, where they later died. Their identities have not yet been released.

A 58-year-old woman in the Ford pickup sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

Olaeta faces multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even when a driver believes they are not impaired, alcohol or drugs can significantly impact coordination and judgment. Impaired driving greatly increases the likelihood of crashes that can result in serious injuries or fatalities. Between 2012 and 2021, an average of 10,850 people lost their lives each year in drunk-driving accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

A thorough independent investigation will be necessary to identify additional contributing factors, including the results of tests conducted to determine the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration.

“Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs may face criminal charges when their actions lead to injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “In addition to criminal proceedings, families of victims may also pursue compensation through civil litigation against the responsible party.”

“An attorney can serve as a strong advocate, helping victims and their families navigate this difficult time while safeguarding their legal rights and ensuring accountability,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the families of those killed in the crash may be eligible to file wrongful death claims. Such claims may seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person loses their life due to another party’s negligent or wrongful actions,” said Stefano Formica, of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“When fatal crashes are caused by reckless behavior such as impaired driving, speeding, or distracted driving, families are often left with the option to pursue legal action against the at-fault driver.”
