David Metz charged after Anderson SC crash kills young child

ANDERSON, SC (April 13, 2026) – An Anderson man has been arrested and charged following a fatal crash involving a toddler Monday night.

According to investigators, the incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of S. Murray Avenue. Authorities said the child followed his father out of a restaurant through a back door while the father was taking out trash and was unaware the boy was behind him.

The child entered the roadway and was struck by a truck driven by David Metz. Officials said Metz continued driving for a short distance before returning to the scene.

The child was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died at approximately 9:10 p.m. Metz was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence.

Following a bond hearing, a judge ordered Metz to wear a GPS monitoring device and have no contact with the victim’s family. The Anderson Police Department, with assistance from state troopers, is investigating the case.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This accident was preventable. Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs pose a serious danger to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

“Drunken and drugged drivers face criminal charges when a crash results in injury or death,” explained Candice Bond, a Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She further noted, “In addition to criminal proceedings, a victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the at-fault party.”

According to the National Safety Council, approximately 10 percent of all fatal motor vehicle accidents involve drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications. These incidents remain one of the leading causes of traffic-related deaths in the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of the young victim could be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such a tragic incident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and work to ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected,” Formica added.
