David Luckett dies in Harrison County military bus accident

HARRISON, MS, (May 26, 2026) – A D’Iberville man was among two people killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle collision involving a military bus in Harrison County, according to authorities.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department said the crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Canal Road near Interstate 10 and Gulfport. Investigators reported that the military bus was returning from a training exercise when it became involved in the collision.

Officials said the crash involved the bus and four additional vehicles. The initial impact reportedly occurred between the military bus and a pickup truck.

Authorities identified one of the victims as 48-year-old David Luckett of D’Iberville. A 45-year-old man also died in the accident. Investigators said both victims were non-military citizens operating their own vehicles at the time of the crash.

Several other individuals sustained injuries in the collision. Additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash have not yet been released as the investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL BUS ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The crash remains under investigation.

Due to their massive size and limited maneuverability, buses can create serious dangers for other motorists traveling nearby. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the two fatalities connected to this collision already mark the second-highest annual total of bus-related deaths in Mississippi since 2022.

Accidents involving buses may occur because of distracted or fatigued driving, equipment failures, or driver negligence. Inadequate training and inexperience can also contribute, particularly because operating a large bus is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle.

Candice Bond, an experienced bus accident attorney, emphasized that independent investigations are often crucial in protecting the rights of grieving families after serious crashes.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a bus crash case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Bus crashes are often complex, and companies often utilize large law firms to defend a negligent driver. An attorney can advocate for a family that lost a loved one by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, and locating witnesses to the crash while carefully guiding families through the legal process.”

Each year, approximately 60,000 bus crashes occur throughout the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of David Luckett may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a devastating accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can follow the official investigation while helping ensure that a family’s rights and best interests are protected. Loved ones of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a catastrophic accident.”
