Off-Duty Officer David Jordan Killed in Trenton Pedestrian Collision

TRENTON, IL (May 19, 2026) — Illinois State Police are assisting local authorities with the investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred late Tuesday night near Trenton.

According to officials, the collision happened shortly before midnight in the 200 block of Wesclin Road. Clinton County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and discovered a man suffering from severe head and torso injuries lying on the pavement.

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to a hospital in O’Fallon, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities identified the victim as 59-year-old David Jordan, an off-duty officer with the New Baden Police Department. Officials said Jordan had served with the department since 2019.

Investigators have not said whether the driver involved remained at the scene or if authorities are actively searching for a suspect vehicle.

The investigation into the deadly collision remains ongoing.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year, thousands of pedestrians are killed on roadways across the United States. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed during the first half of 2024.

“Having the proper resources is critical when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, visibility of signs, and roadway lighting are all potential contributing factors that should be carefully examined during an investigation. These steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue the justice they deserve,” Bond added.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team may be necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are important in helping clients recover compensation for damages and losses resulting from a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of motorists to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately assist families through this difficult time while helping protect their legal rights and interests.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting settlements for far less than a claim may actually be worth,” Formica noted. “An attorney will strongly advocate on behalf of clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive proper compensation.”
