David Hopkins killed in motorcycle collision on Alabama 193 near Dauphin island

MOBILE, AL, (April 12, 2026) – A 75-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday following a rear-end collision in Mobile County, authorities said.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), David E. Hopkins was traveling south on Alabama 193 on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a 2014 Ford Flex struck the bike from behind at about 12:30 p.m. near milepost 7, roughly four miles north of Dauphin Island.

Emergency responders transported Hopkins to USA University Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Ford Flex remained at the scene and was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not released contributing factors.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

“Motorcyclists are widely considered among the most vulnerable users on the road,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

According to Alabama Department of Transportation data and national statistics, the state enforces comprehensive helmet laws, contributing to helmet use in more than 85% of fatal crashes. Despite a temporary decline in 2020-2021, motorcycle accidents have risen again in recent years.

Although motorcycles make up only about 3% of all registered vehicles, they account for roughly 14% of traffic fatalities nationwide. Warmer months tend to see increased motorcycle activity, raising crash risks due to higher traffic volumes and less experienced drivers.

Significant risk factors include speeding and impaired driving, both of which are involved in a large percentage of fatal motorcycle crashes. Approximately two in five victims were not wearing helmets. Intersections are also a major concern, accounting for about one-third of motorcycle fatalities, with a notable increase in such crashes in recent years.

Bond, an experienced motorcycle accident attorney, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility of traffic signs, and lighting must all be carefully reviewed,” Bond said. “A thorough investigation is essential to help families seek accountability and justice after a tragic loss.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of David Hopkins may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such a tragic accident.

“The grief and emotional burden after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests are fully protected,” Formica added.
