DARE COUNTY, NC, (April 08, 2026) — A multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Dare County left two people hospitalized and resulted in charges against a local driver, authorities said.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 43-year-old David Gates of Kill Devil Hills was driving a 2011 Honda eastbound on U.S. Highway 64 at about 3:15 p.m. when he attempted to pass another vehicle near Deep Bay Road.
During the maneuver, Gates collided with an oncoming 2017 Peterbilt truck and two additional vehicles. One driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Outer Banks Hospital for treatment. Gates was also hospitalized and later charged with reckless driving and driving left of center.
