Dauphin Island crash: Paul Byrd Jr. faces DUI charge

DAUPHIN ISLAND, AL, (April 04, 2026) – Authorities arrested a Dauphin Island man Saturday evening after a pickup truck collided with a golf cart, leaving several people injured.

According to the Dauphin Island Police Department, the crash occurred around 6:32 p.m. in the 2600 block of Bienville Boulevard. Investigators say a pickup truck struck the rear of a six-passenger golf cart, causing significant damage to the smaller vehicle.

Multiple individuals, ranging in age from 1 to approximately 40 years old, were involved in the crash. Two victims suffered serious injuries and were transported to nearby trauma centers for treatment. Two young children sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital as a precaution. All of the injured were reported to be in stable condition.

Police identified the driver of the pickup truck as Paul Byrd Jr., 44. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count of driving under the influence. Authorities indicated that additional charges may be filed.

The Dauphin Island Police Department continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to come forward.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This type of accident is often preventable, as impaired driving poses a serious risk to everyone on the road.

“Drunken and drug-impaired drivers can face criminal charges following a crash that causes injuries or fatalities,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In addition to criminal cases, victims may also be entitled to pursue compensation through civil claims against the responsible party,” added Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney.

According to the National Safety Council, about 10 percent of fatal crashes involve drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications, making it a leading cause of roadway deaths.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

An injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending the outcome of the investigation.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, explained that victims often file such claims to recover costs related to medical care, lost income, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies may try to settle quickly for less than a claim is worth,” Formica added. “An attorney can advocate on behalf of victims to ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
