Darwin Olson struck, killed in Ironwood Township collision

IRONWOOD, MI, (March 19, 2026) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle in Ironwood Township early Thursday morning.

Darwin Olson was found near the intersection of Lake Road and Sunset Road at approximately 4:41 a.m. after reports of a pedestrian in the roadway.

According to officials, the child left his home sometime after 4 a.m. before the incident occurred. A preliminary investigation indicates that a northbound vehicle struck the toddler.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, along with Michigan State Police experts, is working to reconstruct the crash. Investigators have interviewed all drivers who traveled along Lake Road during the relevant time frame, but no responsible party has yet been identified.

Authorities are asking anyone with additional information or surveillance footage to come forward.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Michigan recorded 183 pedestrian deaths in 2023, a 6% increase from 173 in 2022, according to the Michigan State Police. This marks the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the past decade. Pedestrian-involved crashes also rose by 11%, with 2,114 incidents reported in 2023 compared to 1,897 in 2022.

The Governors Highway Safety Association notes that one contributing factor is the increasing number of SUVs and pickup trucks on the road, which can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. This reflects a broader national trend, with pedestrian fatalities rising nearly 60% since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all important factors that must be evaluated in cases like this,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential in helping victims’ families pursue compensation for damages or loss following a collision,” Bond added, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Darwin Olson may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide a family through this difficult time while ensuring their rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that may be far less than what the case is worth,” Formica noted. “An attorney will strongly advocate on behalf of their client to ensure fair treatment and proper compensation.”
