Darwin Bahamon Martinez charged after fatal Placentia police chase

PLACENTIA, CA (January 21, 2026) – A 59-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening after his vehicle was struck by a driver fleeing police in Placentia, authorities said.

According to law enforcement, Anaheim police attempted to stop a Jeep Gladiator driven by 21-year-old Darwin Felipe Bahamon Martinez near Mira Loma and Lawrence avenues around 7:41 p.m. Martinez initially pulled over but fled as officers approached, leading to a pursuit. The Jeep later collided with a Honda sedan at the intersection of Madison and Bradford avenues. The Honda’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

When a law enforcement officer attempts to stop a vehicle, motorists are legally required to comply. Failure to do so is a criminal offense. In incidents involving police pursuits, authorities also review whether proper pursuit protocols were followed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatal crashes linked to police pursuits peaked at 455 in 2020, the highest total since at least 2007. In cases such as this, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of retaining legal counsel to conduct an independent investigation to preserve evidence and protect the rights of a grieving family.

“Time is critical in matters like these, and families must ensure that evidence is examined promptly,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Beyond law enforcement efforts, an attorney can assess contributing factors, engage expert witnesses, review driver history, identify witnesses, and analyze applicable insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, counsel can compassionately guide families while firmly safeguarding their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Family members of the victim killed in this collision may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand the profound challenges families face after a sudden loss, and protecting their legal rights is essential,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and work to ensure that a family’s best interests are fully represented. Relatives of wrongful death victims have the right to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress under the law.”
