Darin Ofstie Dies After Motorcycle Crash in Baldwin Township

BALDWIN TOWNSHIP, WI (May 28, 2026) — A 57-year-old Baldwin man lost his life following a motorcycle crash involving a passenger vehicle Thursday afternoon in Baldwin Township, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on 90th Avenue. A 16-year-old Baldwin resident was driving a Pontiac Vibe eastbound and attempting to make a left turn when the vehicle entered the path of an oncoming motorcycle traveling westbound.

The motorcycle was operated by Darin Ofstie, who suffered critical injuries in the collision. Emergency responders arranged for Ofstie to be airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, for advanced medical treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Ofstie later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The teenage driver of the Pontiac was treated at the scene for minor injuries. No additional information regarding contributing factors or potential citations has been released.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

As authorities continue to examine the circumstances of the collision, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of comprehensive independent investigations following serious traffic accidents. Investigators typically review all possible contributing factors, including driver actions, impairment, vehicle conditions, and roadway circumstances.

Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable travelers on U.S. roadways. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles, riders often face a significantly greater risk of severe injury or death when crashes occur.

“Motorcycle accident victims who sustain injuries at the expense of a negligent motorist are subject to a personal injury lawsuit, where they may receive compensation for damages,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “However, in cases where another motorist or entity’s negligence results in another person’s death, surviving family members are entitled to a wrongful death lawsuit following the loss of their loved one.”

Bond added, “While no amount of compensation can truly make up for the loss of a loved one, it is important for families to understand their legal options. A wrongful death attorney can help families navigate the legal process and work toward restoring stability after an unexpected tragedy.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are approximately two dozen times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Darin Ofstie may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages that may include loss of love and companionship, funeral and burial expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from the sudden loss.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, has highlighted the importance of legal representation for individuals and families affected by serious accidents.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming if you, a friend, or family member have suffered a personal injury or the loss of a loved one following an accident,” Formica said. “We understand what victims and families of victims are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
