Daniel DeMaio Died After Car Leaves SC Hwy 21 & Hits Trees

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (July 5, 2026) — A 31-year-old Blackstock man died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 21 North near Ridgeway, according to the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office.

Daniel DeMaio was riding as a passenger when the driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway, went down an embankment, and struck several trees. DeMaio was partially ejected in the crash and had to be extricated from the wreckage with the help of rescue squad members and fire service personnel.

DeMaio was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fairfield County Coroner’s Office has not yet released additional details regarding the identity or condition of the driver.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Driver behavior remains the leading factor behind the rise in traffic deaths nationwide — speeding, impaired driving, and distraction from cellphone use chief among them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 8,055 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025 alone.

As the cause and liability surrounding this crash remain under review, Candice Bond, a veteran accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of a separate, independent investigation led by an experienced attorney.

“Alongside the important work being done by law enforcement, an attorney can go back and re-interview key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage from the crash site, and secure phone and text records connected to the at-fault party,” said Bond, who serves as a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time matters greatly in a case like this, and it’s essential for the victim’s family to make sure evidence is preserved and reviewed without delay.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Daniel DeMaio’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress stemming from a tragedy of this nature.

“Losing a loved one in an accident brings a level of grief and stress that can feel impossible to bear,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize what families are going through during a time like this, and safeguarding their rights matters. A wrongful death lawyer stays on top of the official investigation to make sure the family’s legal interests and rights are fully protected.”
