Sheriff: Dane Waddell Killed in Spartanburg Hit-and-Run Collision

SPARTANBURG, SC, January 07, 2026 – A 31-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run incident in Spartanburg, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Dane Josephine Waddell. Deputies said the crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. in a parking lot on Whitney Road.

Investigators believe Waddell was struck, run over, and dragged by a vehicle. She died shortly after the incident. The driver fled the scene and has not been located.

Officials noted that Waddell was a new mother who gave birth to a baby girl in October 2025.

HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION

Security footage assisted investigators in identifying the type of vehicle involved, though authorities have not yet located it. Spartanburg County officials confirmed that no arrests have been made and the investigation remains active.

The driver who struck Ms. Waddell and fled the scene is expected to face criminal charges once apprehended. Leaving the scene of a collision is a crime, and data shows that hit-and-run crashes occur at alarming rates nationwide. Many suspects flee because they may be impaired, lack a valid license, or fear arrest.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, explained that cases like this often require an independent investigation by a skilled attorney to help protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Access to appropriate investigative resources is essential to examine a hit-and-run crash and establish negligence,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully reviewed. These efforts are necessary to help families seek justice and financial compensation after losing a loved one.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIMS

The surviving family members of Dane Josephine Waddell may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. In such cases, families may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a fatal accident.

“We recognize the hardships families endure following such a devastating loss, and protecting their rights is crucial,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can remain informed about the progress of the official investigation and work to ensure that a family’s legal interests are fully protected. Relatives of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
