Dakota Briley seriously injured in pedestrian accident near Chun’s Reef in Haleiwa

HALEIWA, Hawaii — The Honolulu Police Department is investigating a pedestrian accident that critically injured a 20-year-old North Shore resident on June 14 near the popular Chun’s Reef surf break.

Dakota Briley was struck by a vehicle and pinned between two cars at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway. The son of local surf figure Shawn Briley remains in critical condition at Queen’s Medical Center.

An 18-year-old driver veered onto the eastbound shoulder of Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa. The vehicle struck a traffic sign before hitting Briley, who had been standing off the shoulder near the surf break.

Emergency responders transported Briley to the hospital following the collision. The driver and an unidentified passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police stated speed, alcohol, and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash. The 18-year-old driver and passenger were not injured in the incident.

The Honolulu Police Department continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers have not released additional details about the collision.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Hawaii experienced a deadly 2024 for pedestrians, with 37 fatalities representing a 61% increase from 23 deaths in 2023. Pedestrians accounted for over a third of all 102 traffic deaths statewide.

Hawaii ranks 13th nationally among the most dangerous states for pedestrians, with 2.41 deaths per 100,000 people annually. The state has a disproportionately high percentage of pedestrian deaths compared to other motor vehicle fatalities. Speed contributes to many of the fatal pedestrian crashes. Despite installing 258 raised crosswalks and speed humps since 2019, the rising death toll indicates more safety measures are urgently needed.

Pedestrian crashes often are caused by distracted driving, speeding, and failing to yield to a pedestrian.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” added Bond. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve.”

Bond stressed, “In most instances, pedestrians possess the right-of-way when crossing an intersection or a street, regardless if they are in a marked crosswalk. A driver must yield to any pedestrian.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Dakota Briley may have the right to pursue a personal injury suit pending an investigation.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with mounting expenses that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” Formica added.
