HALEIWA, Hawaii — The Honolulu Police Department is investigating a pedestrian accident that critically injured a 20-year-old North Shore resident on June 14 near the popular Chun’s Reef surf break.
Dakota Briley was struck by a vehicle and pinned between two cars at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway. The son of local surf figure Shawn Briley remains in critical condition at Queen’s Medical Center.
An 18-year-old driver veered onto the eastbound shoulder of Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa. The vehicle struck a traffic sign before hitting Briley, who had been standing off the shoulder near the surf break.
Emergency responders transported Briley to the hospital following the collision. The driver and an unidentified passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police stated speed, alcohol, and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash. The 18-year-old driver and passenger were not injured in the incident.
The Honolulu Police Department continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers have not released additional details about the collision.
