ST. PAUL, MN, (June 27, 2026) – A 69-year-old cyclist died Friday, more than a week after an open car door in St. Paul struck him.
According to police, Ricki Larson was hit on the afternoon of June 27 on the 1600 block of Highland Parkway. Investigators said the incident occurred when a driver parked her car and opened her door, hitting Larson. The victim was taken to Regions Hospital, where he was removed from life support on Friday.
The accident remains under investigation.
“Dooring” collisions are more common in urban areas and account for as much as 20 percent of bicycle accidents, according to the American League of Bicyclists.
The organization noted that traffic laws place responsibility for opening vehicle doors on the person doing so, rather than on those passing by. Under Minnesota law, drivers are required to ensure it’s safe before opening a vehicle door.
