Copiague crash injures Rose Schementi on Montauk highway

COPIAGUE, NY (April 15, 2026) – An 85-year-old woman was seriously injured Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing an intersection in Copiague, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Authorities said Rose Marie Schementi, of Lindenhurst, was crossing Montauk Highway from south to north at S. Strong Avenue shortly after 7:30 a.m. when a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander turning left onto eastbound Montauk Highway struck her.

Schementi was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the 74-year-old driver, a Copiague resident, was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. He was issued a desk appearance ticket.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking witnesses to come forward.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians face danger every day. While all of us need to exercise care, the burden of responsibility falls mainly on drivers.

In 2018, motor vehicles injured an additional 150,000 pedestrians, according to the National Safety Council.

Pedestrian crashes are often linked to distracted driving, speeding, and failure to yield to pedestrians.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all contributing factors that must be carefully reviewed,” Bond added. “These steps are essential in helping those who have lost a loved one pursue justice.”

Bond emphasized, “In most cases, pedestrians have the right-of-way when crossing a street or intersection, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk. Drivers must yield to pedestrians.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Rose Schementi may have the right to pursue a personal injury suit pending an investigation.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often pursue personal injury claims to cover medical expenses, future care, lost income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often indifferent to the mounting financial burden faced by victims. An attorney can help advocate on their behalf and ensure they receive fair compensation,” Formica added.
