Tragic school bus accident in Minco involves Cody Schmidt

Seven people were injured in a school bus crash near Minco on Sept. 8, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The bus, driven by Cody Schmidt, 38, of Minco, was traveling west on Oklahoma 152 near County Street 2760 at around 8 p.m. when Schmidt swerved left to avoid a deer. The vehicle struck the animal and overturned once before coming to rest on its wheels. Schmidt, Minco High School’s head softball coach, was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries.

The bus had 18 passengers returning from a softball game in Anadarko. Four were ejected during the rollover. One adult sustained life-threatening injuries, two children were critically injured, and three others sustained non-serious injuries. Emergency personnel transported the injured to various Oklahoma City hospitals, while some adults drove others to receive medical attention.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Oklahoma recorded approximately 125 fatal tractor-trailer accidents annually between 2017-2023, with over 1,475 injury crashes involving commercial trucks each year during that period, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data.

During this seven-year span, a person died in a truck-related crash every three days on Oklahoma highways, while someone was injured in a truck crash every six hours.

The majority of serious incidents occur on interstate highways and major corridors, often involving driver fatigue, speed-related factors, or mechanical issues, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s commercial vehicle enforcement division.

Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney, said that in such cases, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim.

“Tractor-trailer crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Injured victims may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, pending the results of the investigation.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said, “Victims involved in collisions often seek a personal injury claim to cover medical bills, future medical care, lost income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously indifferent to the mounting costs an injured party may face. An attorney can help ensure victims are protected. We advocate for those affected by these tragedies daily, holding insurance companies accountable for their mistakes,” she added.
