Coachella wrong-way crash kills Meliton Perez Dominguez: CHP

COACHELLA, CA – April 14, 2026 – A 39-year-old man was killed in a wrong-way crash Tuesday night on Interstate 10 in Coachella, California, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Officials said Meliton Perez Dominguez of Phoenix was traveling in a Honda Accord when it was struck by a Toyota Camry that was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes near Dillon Road at approximately 10 p.m.

Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the collision.

Authorities confirmed that another person inside the Honda Accord was also killed in the crash.

CHP continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the wrong-way collision.

FATAL WRONG-WAY CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, wrong-way collisions can result from multiple factors including driver error, distraction, fatigue, and unsafe roadway design.

A significant number of wrong-way crashes are linked to impaired driving. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data suggests that as many as 75 percent of wrong-way collisions involve drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Bond emphasized the importance of an immediate independent investigation in such cases to preserve critical evidence for victims and their families.

“In addition to police work, attorneys can thoroughly evaluate contributing factors to the crash,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Legal teams have the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks on drivers, locate witnesses, and review insurance coverage. An attorney also helps ensure victims and families are supported while protecting their legal rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Meliton Perez Dominguez may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families in such cases may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and damages resulting from a fatal accident.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We understand what families go through, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and ensure the family’s legal interests are properly safeguarded throughout the process.”
