Clayton Teeder Fatally Struck in Winkler County Hit-and-Run Wreck

WINKLER COUNTY, TX, (May 31, 2026) — Texas Department of Public Safety officials are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash Sunday night that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Winkler County.

According to DPS, a southbound vehicle struck a pedestrian near mile marker 225 on County Road 313 at approximately 11 p.m. The driver fled the scene without stopping.

Emergency responders arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the victim as 43-year-old Clayton David Teeder of Lubbock.

Investigators have not released a description of the vehicle involved, and the suspect remains at large.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the Texas Department of Public Safety at 432-498-2131 or the Winkler County Sheriff’s Office at 432-586-3461.

The fatal collision remains under investigation.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In many hit-and-run cases, at-fault drivers leave the scene believing they can avoid responsibility for their actions. However, suspects can face criminal charges when they are identified and apprehended.

Leaving the scene of a crash is a crime, yet statistics show that more than one hit-and-run collision occurs every minute on roadways across the United States.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were 5,924 traffic crashes involving pedestrians in Texas in 2023, resulting in 808 fatalities. Between 2019 and 2023, pedestrian deaths in the state increased by approximately 22 percent.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” added Bond.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. These resources are essential in helping clients pursue monetary compensation for damages or losses following a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Clayton Teeder may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide a family through this difficult period while working to protect their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will strongly advocate for their client to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
