LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle accident that occurred on U.S. 84 near Southeast Drive.
Investigators said the accident happened May 22 at approximately 5 a.m. Emergency personnel transported Christopher Lucero, 37, to University Medical Center, where he later died.
Officials said a 59-year-old man from Lubbock was riding a motorcycle eastbound when he left the roadway and struck a vehicle barrier. His motorcycle landed in the westbound lanes, where another vehicle crashed into it.
Lucero later entered the roadway from the shoulder and collided with a pickup truck driven by a 51-year-old man from Slaton.
A second vehicle, driven by a 49-year-old woman from Slaton, also struck the motorcycle, skidded, and entered a ditch near railroad tracks. A train then hit her vehicle, but she was not injured.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing.

The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic accidents in 2023, representing 15% of all traffic fatalities. This marks a 1.3% increase compared to 2022. The fatality rate for motorcyclists was nearly 28 times higher than that of passenger car occupants.
