SANDY, OR, (April 30, 2026) – A 42-year-old man was killed and another driver seriously injured Thursday evening in a head-on collision along Highway 26 near Sandy, according to Oregon State Police.
Troopers reported that a Toyota Tacoma was traveling eastbound near milepost 28 at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a Subaru Outback.
Christopher James Hamre, a passenger in the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Subaru’s driver, a 45-year-old Redmond woman, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the 18-year-old driver of the Tacoma, from Whitefish, Montana, was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators.
Oregon State Police have not indicated whether charges will be filed as the investigation continues.
