Christian Royston tragically killed in Ames head-on accident

AMES, Iowa — The Story County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal head-on crash that occurred on May 28 on Iowa 30 near Sand Hill Trail.

The accident happened at around 11:30 p.m.

A 41-year-old Slater woman was driving west in the eastbound lane of Iowa 30 when her car struck an oncoming vehicle. Christian Royston, 26, was driving the eastbound car. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles.

Emergency responders arrived and pronounced Royston dead at the scene.

Paramedics airlifted the wrong-way driver to a Des Moines hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate.


CRASH INVESTIGATION

Wrong-way accidents can occur for numerous reasons, including driver error, distracted driving, and poor road design.

The most common cause of these accidents is driver error. However, the most common cause of wrong-way collisions is DUI, according to NTSB. Statistics show that impaired drivers cause up to 75 percent of all wrong-way crashes.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and require thorough examination,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
