Christian Mares Faces DUI Charges in Geneva Head-On Crash

GENEVA, IL (July 4, 2026) — A 71-year-old Geneva woman was killed and her 26-year-old son suffered critical injuries after a head-on collision Saturday night in Geneva. Authorities have charged Aurora resident Christian Mares in connection with the crash.

According to the Geneva Police Department, the collision occurred shortly before 9:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of South Randall Road. Investigators said a northbound 2013 Chevrolet Camaro crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2019 Nissan Versa head-on.

The driver of the Nissan Versa, a 71-year-old Geneva woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 26-year-old son, who was riding as a passenger, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital before being airlifted to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in Chicago with critical injuries.

Police identified the Camaro driver as 40-year-old Christian Mares of Aurora. He was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting the Geneva Police Department as the investigation into the fatal collision continues.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired driving continues to pose a serious danger on roadways, often resulting in preventable tragedies that leave families devastated.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or kills another person,” explained Candice Bond, a Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She added, “In addition to criminal prosecution, families affected by these crashes may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

According to the National Safety Council, 10 percent of all fatal automobile accidents are caused by drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other medications. These accidents are the second-leading cause of automobile fatalities in this country.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim’s family could have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a tragic or catastrophic crash.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation while helping ensure the family’s best interests remain protected,” Formica added.
