Cherry Cayetano Sobel killed in Midwood crash: NYPD

MIDWOOD, NY (April 02, 2026) – A 44-year-old woman was killed after being struck by an ambulance Thursday in Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood, authorities said.

The New York Police Department reported that Cherry Cayetano Sobel was hit by an ambulance operated by Maimonides Medical Center as it made a left turn from Avenue O onto Ocean Avenue.

The driver continued driving following the collision. Sobel was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Officials believe the driver may not have realized that a person had been struck. The driver has since been identified and suspended pending the investigation. No charges have been filed.

FATAL AMBULANCE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Emergencies often require a rapid response from ambulances, but first responders must still exercise caution on roadways.

A variety of factors can contribute to ambulance accidents, including speeding, driver fatigue, driver inexperience and failure to activate emergency lights and sirens. Ambulances are involved in about 6,500 accidents each year, and 34 percent of them result in injuries or fatalities.

Regardless of the findings of any police investigation, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation to secure evidence and protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Time is critical in cases like this, and families must ensure that evidence is examined promptly.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Cherry Cayetano Sobel may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand the difficult experience families endure, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the investigation and help ensure that their best interests are protected. Families are entitled to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.”
