CHP: Chaz Castillo killed in Encino pileup crash on 101 Freeway

ENCINO, CA, (April 25, 2026) – A 19-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the 101 Freeway in Encino, according to authorities.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Chaz Castillo.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident began just before 2 a.m. when a vehicle became disabled after striking the center divider near White Oak Avenue and remained in the first lane with its hazard lights on.

Authorities said a second vehicle then collided with the stalled car at a high rate of speed. Shortly afterward, a third vehicle struck one of the stopped vehicles, resulting in a chain-reaction crash.

Castillo, one of the drivers who had exited his vehicle, was fatally injured during the collision.

Officials have not confirmed whether others were injured. The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A variety of factors contribute to the rise in traffic fatalities, with driver behavior often playing a central role. Speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving—particularly involving mobile devices—remain leading causes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 people died in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

As investigators work to determine the cause and liability of this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can revisit witness statements, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Acting quickly is essential in cases like this, as families must ensure that evidence is preserved and evaluated in a timely manner,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Chaz Castillo may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in such tragic incidents may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages.

“We recognize that losing a loved one brings both emotional and financial hardship,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “If a death occurs due to another party’s negligence, families should seek legal guidance to pursue the justice they deserve.”

“Insurance companies may attempt to minimize payouts or deny claims altogether. An attorney can help protect a family’s rights and ensure they are treated fairly throughout the legal process,” he added.
