Chatham woman dies in Nassau head-on collision on U.S. 20

NASSAU, N.Y., Nov. 10 — A fatal head-on crash Sunday afternoon in Nassau claimed the life of a Chatham woman, state troopers reported.

The collision occurred around 2 p.m. on U.S. Route 20 when an eastbound driver veered into the opposite lane between Route 66 and Kinderhook Lane. The vehicle struck an oncoming westbound car driven by 80-year-old Patricia A. Balcom.

Balcom died at the scene. The eastbound motorist was transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries but was later listed in stable condition.

State police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Driver error is the leading cause of head-on collisions, though speeding, distraction, impairment, poor roadway layout, inexperienced motorists, and driver confusion also play major roles in these types of crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 42,915 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2021 — an increase of more than 10 percent compared to 2020.

“Investigators will assess a wide range of factors, including lighting, roadway layout, and visibility,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Accident reconstruction specialists are often called in to determine how a collision occurred. These tools and resources are essential for helping clients pursue financial recovery following a serious or fatal crash,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Patricia Balcom may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages stemming from a tragic accident.

“Losing a loved one in a sudden crash is incredibly painful and overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during these difficult times, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and work to safeguard the family’s best interests throughout the legal process.”
