ATLANTA, GA, (May 25, 2026) – A 51-year-old woman was killed and three others were seriously injured early Monday morning after a driver fleeing a traffic stop crashed near Interstate 20 and Hill Street in Atlanta.
Authorities identified the victim as Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson.
According to investigators, the incident began around 2:40 a.m. when a Hyundai Elantra allegedly driven by Fre’shun Tyai White was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 at approximately 90 mph in a 55-mph zone.
A Georgia state trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but officials said the driver initially slowed before accelerating away and driving recklessly through traffic.
Investigators said the Hyundai exited onto the Hill Street ramp, crossed Hill Street, and entered a Shell gas station parking lot, where the vehicle lost control. Authorities stated the car became airborne before crashing into two parked vehicles.
The impact pushed the vehicles, along with Patterson, through a fence and into an empty lot. Patterson, who was standing outside the passenger door of a parked car near a Food Mart, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Three additional people suffered serious injuries.
White now faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle, according to authorities.
The crash remains under active investigation.
