Charlotte County hit-and-run leaves bicyclist dead; Flinn held

CHARLOTTE, FL, (April 27, 2026) – A 33-year-old Englewood man was killed Monday night in a hit-and-run crash in Charlotte County, according to authorities.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the unidentified bicyclist was struck by a Ford E-250 driven by Christopher Lee Flinn at approximately 8:45 p.m. near 10th Street in Englewood.

Investigators said Flinn fled the scene after the collision, with the victim’s bicycle reportedly lodged underneath the van. Authorities later located and arrested Flinn. He told deputies he did not recall hitting a person or bicycle but admitted he did not stop following the crash.

Flinn has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL HIT-AND RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION

Florida law requires drivers to immediately stop at the scene of any crash involving property damage, injury, or death.

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 104,273 hit-and-run crashes in 2023, resulting in 271 fatalities and 871 injuries statewide. Many drivers leave the scene due to impairment, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, stated that an independent investigation is crucial in cases like this to protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is essential to thoroughly investigate a hit-and-run crash and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and roadway lighting must be carefully evaluated. These steps are vital to help families seek justice and financial compensation after a tragic loss.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of the victim may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Loved ones of victims in fatal accidents can seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and pain following such tragedies.

“We recognize the immense challenges families face after losing a loved one, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and work to ensure the family’s best interests are represented. Relatives may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a devastating incident.”
