Charleston hit-and-run crash kills bicyclist Sherif Mahmoud: Police

CHARLESTON, SC, January 06, 2026 — A bicyclist was killed Tuesday night in a hit-and-run crash on the Ashley River Bridge, Charleston police said.

Authorities identified the victim as 36-year-old Sherif Mahmoud, of Egypt. Police said Mahmoud was riding an e-bike when he was struck by a vehicle at approximately 7 p.m. The driver fled the scene.

Mahmoud later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Investigators believe the vehicle involved is a dark-colored 2011–2015 Lincoln MKX with front bumper damage. The vehicle was last seen exiting onto Lockwood Drive near Bee Street. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 843-720-2422.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Leaving the scene of a crash is a criminal offense, yet data show that approximately 11 percent of all traffic collisions involve a hit-and-run driver. In many cases, at-fault motorists flee because they believe they can evade responsibility.

Suspects may leave the scene due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest if they remain.

E-bikes and e-scooters continue to grow in popularity nationwide, while safety concerns increase. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), deaths and injuries involving e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards have risen in recent years. CPSC data estimate that 104 people died in e-bike-related incidents between 2017 and 2022.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation as soon as possible to protect a victim’s rights.

“Having sufficient resources is essential to investigate a hit-and-run accident and establish negligence,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and roadway lighting are all factors that must be thoroughly reviewed. These efforts are critical in helping injured victims and their families pursue justice and rightful compensation.”

Bond added that timely review of evidence is crucial in cases of this nature.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation proceeds, the family of Sherif Mahmoud may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a fatal accident.

“The emotional burden after losing a loved one in a bicycle crash can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica noted that a wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation while working to safeguard a family’s legal rights and long-term interests.

He added that legal representation can help protect families from aggressive insurance tactics while thoroughly reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash and advocating on their behalf.
