Charles Henderson dies after being hit by trooper car in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, IL, (April 25, 2026) — A 45-year-old man, identified as Charles Henderson, died early Saturday after being struck by an Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper’s vehicle in Springfield.

According to authorities, Henderson was bent down in the roadway near the intersection of South Sixth Street and East Linton Avenue when the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. An ISP trooper traveling southbound in the middle lane, approaching a green light, struck him.

Henderson was transported to Springfield Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:12 a.m., officials said.

The trooper involved in the crash remained at the scene and rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived. The identity of the trooper has not been released.

The incident remains under investigation by the ISP Division of Internal Investigation in accordance with the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Illinois reported 299,133 motor vehicle crashes in 2023, with pedestrian-related incidents accounting for about 1.5 percent of the total, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Although relatively few in number, these crashes made up 17.3 percent of all fatal accidents and 6.8 percent of injury crashes statewide. In total, 195 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic incidents, highlighting the heightened risks faced by individuals on foot.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting are typically reviewed in these cases,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In many situations, accident reconstruction experts are brought in to determine exactly what occurred. These efforts are crucial in helping victims or their families pursue compensation for losses,” Bond added.

Safety experts, including the Governors Highway Safety Association, note that the growing presence of SUVs and pickup trucks may contribute to reduced visibility of pedestrians. This aligns with a broader national pattern showing nearly a 60% rise in pedestrian fatalities since 2013.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Charles Henderson may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, emotional suffering, and funeral-related expenses following a tragic accident,” Formica explained.

An experienced attorney can help guide families through the legal process while safeguarding their rights during such a difficult time.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push quick settlements that may be far below what a case is truly worth,” Formica added. “Having proper legal representation can make a significant difference.”
