Charles Blackmon dies after pickup drives onto sidewalk in Oakland

OAKLAND, CA, (May 16, 2026) – A 65-year-old man, Charles Blackmon, was killed Saturday night in a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash in Oakland, according to police.

Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. near East Bay Market & Liquor at the intersection of 85th Avenue and International Boulevard. Police reported that Blackmon was standing outside the business when a pickup truck veered onto the sidewalk and struck multiple pedestrians.

Investigators confirmed that Blackmon and two other men died as a result of the collision. Three additional individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck was a 17-year-old who was allegedly traveling at speeds exceeding 50 mph in a 25-mph zone at the time of the crash. The teen was later arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.

The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Leaving the scene of a crash is a criminal offense, yet data shows that hit-and-run incidents occur frequently across U.S. roadways. In many cases, drivers flee due to impairment, lack of licensing, or fear of arrest.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized the importance of independent investigations in cases like this to protect the rights of grieving families.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Factors such as roadway conditions, signage visibility, and lighting conditions must all be carefully examined. These steps are essential in helping families pursue justice and financial recovery after losing a loved one in a hit-and-run crash.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Charles Blackmon may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and other losses following a tragic accident.

“We understand the profound grief families endure after losing a loved one in such circumstances, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can follow the official investigation closely and work to protect the family’s best interests throughout the legal process. Relatives may pursue compensation for emotional suffering, loss of companionship, and related damages.”
