Charles Barnes Killed by Wrong-Way Driver in Rochester

Rochester, NY (June 25, 2026) — Two people lost their lives early Thursday morning in a multi-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way motorist in Rochester.

According to New York State Police, 21-year-old Charles Barnes, of Rochester, was driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on the Rochester Inner Loop at approximately 1:26 a.m. when a 2024 Honda CR-V traveling westbound on the eastbound side of the roadway struck the Ford head-on. Following the initial collision, the Ford then struck a 2012 Jeep Liberty.

Barnes was declared deceased at the scene. A 21-year-old passenger riding in the Ford also died in the crash.

The 39-year-old driving the Honda sustained serious injuries, while the 29-year-old driving the Jeep suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Tragic incidents such as this could often be avoided if drivers followed the rules of the road, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here.

Wrong-way drivers put everyone on the road at serious risk, and these types of crashes can stem from a variety of causes, including driver error, distracted driving, and poor road design.

NTSB statistics show that as many as 75 percent of all wrong-way crashes are caused by a driver operating a vehicle while under the influence.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully considered and thoroughly examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to help piece together exactly what happened. All of these resources play a critical role in helping clients secure fair monetary compensation for their damages or losses following a collision,” said Bond, a well-known auto accident attorney and analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of Charles Barnes may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this one.

“The grief and stress that follow the loss of a loved one in an accident can be truly overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand exactly what families must go through, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay closely informed on the official investigation and work to ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests are fully protected.”
