MSP: Ceiliah Slama hurt in Highway 22 collision with school bus

MANKATO TWP, MN, (April 22, 2026) – An 18-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a collision involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle in Mankato Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP).

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 3:28 p.m. on the northbound side of Highway 22 near 200th Street. A 2013 THMS school bus collided with a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan under circumstances that remain under investigation.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as Ceiliah Christine Slama of Lake Crystal, sustained serious injuries in the crash. She was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems for medical treatment.

Officials confirmed that no other injuries were reported in the incident.

The MSP has not yet released additional details regarding what may have caused the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Buses pose unique dangers to other road users, including motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians, largely due to their size and limited visibility.

A variety of factors may contribute to crashes like this, such as driver distraction, fatigue, mechanical failures, or human error. Operating a large bus also requires specialized training and experience, which can influence safety outcomes. Each year in the U.S., approximately 60,000 bus-related accidents occur, leading to injuries for many individuals.

According to Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, it is crucial that an independent investigation is conducted promptly in these cases to safeguard victims’ rights.

“Bus accidents are often complicated, with multiple contributing elements,” Bond explained.

“An experienced attorney can help protect victims, especially since bus companies often deploy their own investigators and resources to defend those involved.”

Bond added that legal representation can assist victims by securing expert analysis, reviewing driver records, identifying witnesses, and evaluating insurance coverage while guiding them through the legal process.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Ceiliah Slama may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, emphasized that the aftermath of a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting a victim’s family life, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, as this enables proper negotiation with insurance companies,” Formica stated.

“Insurance providers often overlook the full extent of costs an injured person may face. An attorney plays a key role in ensuring victims receive fair compensation. We advocate for victims every day, holding insurers accountable for their obligations,” he added.
